The Opportunity Awaits

Are you practical, hands-on, and take pride in keeping things running smoothly? We're looking for a motivated Technical / Handy Person to join our Operations team and play an important role in maintaining Council facilities, equipment, and assets across the region. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a varied role where no two days are the same, with opportunities to travel, work outdoors, and contribute directly to the communities we serve.

This is a temporary 3-month position, based at the Katherine Regional Support Centre, with occasional travel to our communities & townships.

Whether you're maintaining grounds, repairing infrastructure, or supporting projects across remote communities, you'll play an important role in creating safe, functional, and welcoming environments for staff, residents, and visitors.

What your day will look like, but are not limited to: 

As the Technical / Handy Person, you'll be responsible for maintaining Council assets and facilities in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition. Your duties will include:
  • Delivering and collecting supplies from local businesses and transport providers.
  • Conducting routine inspections of Council assets and reporting faults.
  • Maintaining sheds, yards, storage facilities, and outdoor areas.
  • Undertaking mowing, whipper-snipping, weed control, and general grounds maintenance.
  • Assisting with landscaping and gardening projects.
  • Supporting operational service delivery across communities throughout the region

The Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a reliable, self-motivated individual who enjoys practical work and takes ownership of your responsibilities. 
You bring experience in gardening, landscaping, grounds maintenance, turf management, facility upkeep, or a related field. You are comfortable using a range of tools, plant, and equipment and understand the importance of maintaining assets in a safe, functional, and presentable condition.
While capable of working independently, you also understand the importance of collaboration. You communicate effectively, build positive working relationships, and are willing to assist colleagues to ensure team objectives and organisational goals are achieved.

You will bring: 

  • Experience in gardening, landscaping, grounds maintenance, asset maintenance, or similar practical roles.
  • Sound knowledge of safe work practices and workplace health and safety requirements
  • Experience operating and maintaining tools, equipment, and machinery relevant to the role
  • Chemical Handling Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
  • Parks & Gardens qualification, certificate, or relevant experience.
  • White Card (or willingness to obtain).
  • Current First Aid Certificate.
  • Forklift Licence (or willingness to obtain)

Other Requirements 

  • Criminal History Check (recent, within 3 months).
  • A current Working with Children’s Card (Ochre Card).
  • A current unrestricted Drivers Licence.
