The Opportunity Awaits

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and detail-oriented professional to play a key role in supporting the financial integrity and operational success of Victoria Daly Regional Council. As the Accountant – Payroll, Rates and Leases, you will contribute to the delivery of essential services across remote communities while developing expertise across payroll, property rating, lease administration and financial management. Working within a supportive finance team and reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will have the opportunity to build strong stakeholder relationships, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and make a meaningful impact in a diverse and community-focused organisation committed to creating safe, connected and thriving communities.

This role is based either in the Katherine Regional Support Centre or as a Remote work from home arrangement.

What your day will look like, but are not limited to: 

No two days will be the same in this diverse and rewarding role. You'll be responsible for managing the end-to-end payroll function, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time while maintaining compliance with relevant legislation and industrial agreements. You'll also oversee key rates administration activities, including maintaining property records, processing payments, managing customer enquiries, and supporting annual rating processes. In addition, you'll assist with the administration of Council's property leases, monitoring lease obligations, maintaining records, and supporting renewals and reporting.

The Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will bring experience in payroll administration and a strong understanding of payroll legislation, superannuation, taxation requirements, and financial reconciliations. Experience in rates, property administration, or lease management will be highly regarded.

You will bring: 

  • Demonstrated experience in payroll administration, ideally within a finance, local government, or complex organisational environment.
  • Sound knowledge of payroll legislation, superannuation, taxation requirements, awards, enterprise agreements, and payroll reconciliations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy when managing payroll, rates, lease, and financial administration processes. 
  • Well-developed organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience using payroll and accounting systems. 
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, enabling you to build positive relationships with employees, ratepayers, tenants, government agencies, and other stakeholders. 
  • A relevant qualification in Accounting, Finance, Payroll, Business Administration, or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience.

Other Requirements 

  • Criminal History Check (recent, within 3 months).
  • A current Working with Children’s Card (Ochre Card).
  • A current unrestricted Drivers Licence.
