How you’ll make a difference
As our Media and Communications Officer, you will report to our Executive Team and work closely alongside our community services team. Your primary responsibility will put together schedules of events in the Victoria Daly Regional and organise promotion in the press and through tourism avenues to bolster our region's visibility.
Collaborating with our team to project manage the Council's regional plan and annual report is something you will do in this role. These documents are mandatory for the Council to have completed and include KPI's for service delivery.
While this role is based out of our Katherine head office, you will regularly travel out to more remote communities in our region to build relationships with the community and find out about upcoming events, as well as cover events.
Day-to-day duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Proactively reach out to council and community members to find out about events in our region;
- Developing a calendar of upcoming events across our region for both internal and external use;
- Provide public information and guides on how to travel to different communities and the accommodation available.
- Work alongside our executive team and mayor to prepare any necessary media releases; Collaborate with other community organisations and media outlets to promote key topics about the region that the mayor and executive team want in the media.
- Project manage the creation and update of our Regional Plan and Annual Report.
- Develop and deliver website content that supports and enhanced customer experience

As the Victoria Daly region has a large Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, you will need to ensure cultural sensitivity and awareness across all communication you create, both internal and external.
What you’ll bring to the team
To succeed as our Media and Communications Officer, you will be passionate about promoting our region and amplifying its visibility. A proactive team player, you will be excited about driving your relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, and enthusiastic about learning about local region events.
You will have solid project management experience and have strong skills in planning, collaborating, and reporting.
Working in the Victoria Daly region, you will have experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and a strong cultural understanding of how to create content that is culturally appropriate.
You will have:
- Qualifications and/or experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, or communications (including social media)
- Experience with liaising with the public
- Demonstrated high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to write media releases, articles, and reports and undertake research and manage the advertising requirements of the organisation.
- Well - developed information technology skills, including experience in social media platforms and web-based content management systems
